WHAT IS MACROLANE?

Macrolane is a smooth, clear, non-animal based hyaluronic acid gel produced by Q-med – the world leaders in the manufacturing of the facial dermal fillers, Restylane and Restylane Perlane.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MACROLANE AND RESTYLANE?

Macrolane is a thicker gel used for body aesthetics rather than facial aesthetic. It therefore creates greater volume with a slower absorption rate.

WHAT CAN MACROLANE BE USED FOR?

  • Breasts – many women wish to improve the shape and/or fullness of their breasts especially after pregnancy, breast feeding, weight loss, ageing or hormonal changes.
  • Buttock shaping
  • Concavities or asymmetry caused by liposuction
  • Surgical scars
  • Calves

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MACROLANE?

Research has shown that there are a significant number of women who would like to adjust the shape of their body in a natural, non-permanent way that does not involve the use of implants or body fat in a major surgical procedure.

The benefits of Macrolane therefore include:

  • No risks from general anaesthetic – only local anaesthetic is required
  • No scars - macrolane is an injectable treatment
  • No hospital stay - this procedure is done as an out –patient
  • No prolonged recovery time - normal activities can be resumed afterwards
  • No time off work - most patients return to work the next day
  • No foreign material in the body - hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body
  • No false/artificial look of implants - results are totally natural looking
  • No interference with breast screening - including ultrasound scans & mammograms

PREPARING FOR THE TREATMENT

Prior to any treatment you will have a full consultation with the doctor. During this consultation your expectations and treatment goals will be discussed and an examination carried out to assess any abnormalities or asymmetries. In addition, your medical history will be taken to assess your suitability. The benefits and potential side effects of the treatment will also be discussed in full.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?

The treatment is carried out as an out-patient procedure (therefore no hospital stay is required). Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area being treated. In the case of breast shaping, the Macrolane gel is injected using a needle in the crease below the breast and placed under the breast tissue in the subglandular plane. The treatment time is around 40 minutes and approximately 100ml of Macrolane can be injected into each breast.

IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?

Minimal discomfort may be experienced whilst the area is being numbed with the local anaesthetic injection.

AFTER THE TREATMENT

The results are instant, however you should expect some reduction in volume over the next few days as any mild swelling resolves and the local anaesthetic is metabolised. There maybe some tenderness in the area for up to a week. You can resume normal activities after the treatment and drive yourself home however it is recommended that you wear a good support bra for the first week and avoid any physical activity for 2 weeks.

IS IT SAFE?

Our priority at The Hadleigh Clinic is to only offer treatments with a high safety profile. All the products we use have undergone years of rigorous independent research and are proven to be safe and effective. Macrolane is produced using NASHA technology which has been used in more than 9 million treatments in 70 countries worldwide with excellent results and minimal adverse effects. However, all medical procedures carry some element of risk.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL RISKS/SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH MACROLANE?

Although uncommon, possible adverse effects may include:

  • Injection-related reactions. These reactions may include swelling, discomfort or bruising after the treatment. Such reactions are typically mild and resolve spontaneously
  • Allergic reaction. The risk of an allergic reaction is extremely rare and they are usually self-limiting. Allergic reactions can however be treated with oral or injectable corticosteroids or the product removed by aspiration or using an injectable enzyme (hyaluronidase).
  • Infection. As with all injections, this procedure carries a risk of infection. The syringe is sterile and standard precautions associated with injectable materials are taken. Antibiotics will be given prophylactically.

HOW LONG WILL THE EFFECTS LAST?

While the effects of Macrolane are long lasting and safer than comparable treatments the procedure is still temporary. Additional treatments will be required periodically. Studies show that 75% of patients considered the results to still be improved after 12 months. The duration and effect are very individual. Soft tissue condition, age, lifestyle, muscle activity and the degree of perfection demanded by the patient will influence the duration and effect of Macrolane. Generally we advise that after 9-12 months a touch-up/follow-up treatment will be required to sustain the degree of correction

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR MACROLANE TREATMENT

Suitable patients include those who would like to adjust the shape of their body in a natural, non-permanent way that does not involve the use of implants or body fat in a major surgical procedure.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR MACROLANE TREATMENT IN THE BREAST

Patients who wish to improve the shape or fullness in their breasts include those who:

  • Have smaller breasts (A-C) and want a modest increase in volume/fullness
  • Wish to improve the shape of their breast or increase volume in the upper part of the breast
  • Wish to correct breast asymmetry
  • Do not have significant breast drooping or excess skin laxity over the breast

WHO IS NOT SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?

Like all cosmetic procedures we do not treat pregnant or nursing women.

PRICING INFORMATION

The consultation fee for this treatment is £50 which is redeemable against the treatment cost.

Breast Treatment

£2800 (100 mls per breast)

This is the price of a typical Macrolane treatment. Individual requirements however can vary with less or more Macrolane product being requested. The price of the treatment would therefore be adjusted accordingly.

A follow up treatment (approximately 50mls/breast) in a years time will cost in the region of £1400, but the cost of the top up treatments is likely to decrease because less product will be needed over time to sustain optimum results.

Body treatment

The cost of body contouring treatment is highly variable depending on the volume of product required. This will be discussed in full during your consultation
