WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Dermal fillers are sterile gels used to plump up areas of the skin, helping them look firmer and restoring the skin’s former youthful appearance.

ARE THEY SAFE?

Our priority at The Hadleigh Clinic is to only offer treatments with a high safety profile. All the dermal filler products we use have undergone years of rigorous independent research and are proven to be safe and effective. Our products do not contain any animal derivatives.

CHOOSING WHICH PRODUCT TO USE?

The distinguishing factor between the fillers is the gel-particle size and the length of time they last. During your consultation with the doctor, your expectations of the cosmetic effect of this treatment will be discussed and the correct product will be identified e.g. fillers with small particles are used for superficial lines and larger particle gels for deeper wrinkles, folds and lips.

  • Restylane Products
The Restylane products (Restylane, Restylane Lipp, Perlane and Restylane SubQ) are sterile gels consisting of biodegradable forms of hyaluronic acid. Hylauronic acid is present in all living tissue. It is a precursor to collagen and a natural humectant (water holding molecule), helping to keep the skin supple, hydrated and volumous.
  • Radiesse
Radiesse is made of very small, smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres, which are suspended in a water-based gel carrier. As Radiesse is injected, the gel and Radiesse microspheres form a “scaffold”, stimulating collagen production and encouraging tissue growth in and around the injection area. This “partnership” between Radiesse and your own body creates a natural look, comprised of your own tissue and Radiesse microspheres.
  • Bio-Alcamid
Bio-Alcamid is a revolutionary water based gel which is permanent. Bio-Alcamid is used for soft tissue augmentation and therefore suitable for cheek and chin enhancement in addition to the reconstruction of congenital or acquired soft tissue deficits.

WHERE CAN DERMAL FILLERS BE USED?

Wrinkles and Folds:

  • Nose to Mouth Lines (Naso-labial lines)
  • Mouth to Chin Lines (Marionette lines)
  • Tear Troughs (under eye area)
  • Frown Lines
  • Upper Lip Lines
  • Smile Lines

Volume enhancement:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Chin

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?

The filler is injected with a very fine needle under the skin surface. An anaesthetic cream is applied to the area for 45 minutes prior to the treatment. Any discomfort is therefore minimal. For lip treatments, an anaesthetic nerve block is used which is similar to a dental injection. Treatments take about 20 minutes.

AFTER THE TREATMENT

The results with dermal fillers are instant. After the treatment the treated area may be slightly red and/or slightly swollen, however you can resume normal activities, drive yourself home or return to work immediately after the treatment

HOW LONG WILL THE EFFECTS LAST?

This depends on the type of filler used and the structure of your skin. Other factors such as lifestyle, age and the degree of perfection demanded by the individual will also influence the life of the filler. Hyaluronic acid products such as Restylane and Perlane typically last 6-12 months, Radiesse 12-18 months and Bio-Alcamid is permanent. Additional touch up treatments can be performed at any time after the initial treatment.

WHO IS NOT SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?

Dermal fillers have not been tested in pregnant or nursing women, and are therefore not advised. If you have a history of cold sores in the area to be treated, it is advisable that you take anti-herpes medicine (which we will prescribe) before and after the treatment to help reduce the likelihood of an outbreak of cold sores.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Although uncommon, possible adverse effects may include:

  • Injection-related reactions. These reactions may include swelling, redness, discomfort, itching and bruising at the injection site immediately after the treatment. Such reactions are typically mild and resolve within a few hours.
  • Allergic reaction. The risk of an allergic reaction is extremely rare and they are usually self-limiting. Allergic reactions can however be treated with oral or injectable corticosteroids or the product removed using an injectable enzyme (hyaluronidase).
  • Infection. As with all injections, this procedure carries a risk of infection. The syringe is sterile and standard precautions associated with injectable materials are taken.
