WHAT IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Laser hair removal treats unwanted hair with quick safe bursts of light. Lasers emit a precise light which is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair and converted into heat. If the hair is in the growth stage, this heat is transmitted down the hair shaft into the hair follicle, which it destroys so preventing the follicle from producing new hair.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
If you are tired of painful waxing, shaving and plucking, laser hair removal is the answer. Laser hair removal is non-invasive and safely removes unwanted body hair without any damage to your skin.
PREPARING FOR THE TREATMENT
Prior to any treatment you will have a full consultation with our doctor. A pre-treatment test patch will then be carried out so that the laser parameters are matched to your skin and hair type ensuring no unexpected skin reactions occur during your full treatment.
The laser targets the pigment in the hair therefore it is important that you do not have a tan (natural or artificial). If you do have a tan you should wait at least 2 weeks after your last UV exposure to ensure there is no residual activity in the pigment producing cells. You should also stop plucking, waxing or threading for 2 weeks prior to a treatment and change to shaving or cutting the hair so that the hair can grow to approximately 1mm in length (or flush with the skin) at the time of your treatment.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?
While pain tolerance is an individual matter, most people experience no more than a slight stinging sensation during the treatment. In addition to the laser’s special cooling tip we also have a separate state-of-the-art cooling machine (Cryo 6) to cool the skin, before, during and after the treatment to make the experience as comfortable as possible and minimise any skin reactions.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
At The Hadleigh Clinic we have invested in the latest laser technology. While this method allows large areas to be covered at unusually high speed the exact amount of time required is determined by the size of area being treated. The underarm area takes a matter of minutes while the back or legs may require 30-40 minutes.
AFTER THE TREATMENT
After the treatment some patients may experience a slight reddening around the hair follicle which typically disappears within a few minutes. Normal activities can be resumed immediately after the treatment. The hair will remain in the skin but over the next 2-3 weeks the growing hair that has been treated by the laser will gradually drop out.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
The number of treatments required varies depending on hair density, hair colour, skin type, the area being treated and your hair growth. In turn, the density of your hair and its growth depend on other factors such as age, hormones, medication and your ethnic background. All hair follicles go through periods of dormancy and growth. Laser treatment only affects hair follicles that are actively producing hair at the time of treatment; resting follicles must enter the growth phase before they can be effectively treated. For this reason the treatment must be repeated until all the hair follicles have passed through the growth phase. Typically 6-8 treatments are required at 6 week intervals.
IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL PERMANENT?
At The Hadleigh Clinic we only use lasers approved by the FDA for permanent hair reduction. Laser treatment will only affect actively growing follicles and therefore we cannot guarantee that every hair follicle will have passed through the growth phase during the course of the treatment. Occasionally, you may have a few hairs regrow over a period of time which we why we recommend a maintenance treatment after 6-12 months.
WHO IS SUITABLE FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
Men and women of all skin colours have been successfully treated. However, as the treatment depends on the light energy being absorbed by the pigment colour of the hair, darker hair responds better than blond hair. White, grey or platinum blond hair which contains virtually no pigment may not be successfully treated with laser treatment. In addition darker skin colours may require more treatments to achieve the desired result.
WHO IS NOT SUITABLE FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
Laser treatment is not recommended in patients who are pregnant, have skin pigment loss (vitiligo), are hypersensitive to light or who have active skin infection in the area requiring treatment.
IS THE TREATMENT SAFE?
Yes. Lasers have been used in medicine for over 30 years and it is totally non-invasive.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS?
Side effects from laser hair removal are extremely rare due to the advanced technology of the laser we use and the medical experience of the doctor carrying out your treatment. Whilst we do everything we can to avoid adverse reactions, even with the best care, they can still occur in certain individuals because of skin sensitivities, genetic variance and allergies to light treatments, which are impossible to predict. The most common side effect is slight redness of the skin which resolves spontaneously in a day or so. In rare cases there may be a temporary dark colouration in the treated area which typically resolves after a few weeks. In very rare cases there may be loss of pigmentation in the treated area which can be permanent.
