Pre-Treatment Advice
- Smoking
You are advised not to smoke for two weeks prior to and two weeks after your treatment. Smoking decreases your circulation and slows down healing time.
- Aspirin
Do not take Aspirin or products containing Aspirin for two weeks prior to or following your treatment. Aspirin has an effect on your blood’s ability to clot and could increase your tendency to bleed at the time of treatment and during the post-operative period. Please consult with your GP if you have been prescribed Aspirin. You are also advised to avoid anti-inflammatory pain killers e.g. Ibuprofen/Neurofen, Voltarol/Diclofenac etc for one week prior to your treatment.
- Alcohol
You are advised not to drink alcohol for 5 days prior to treatment. Alcohol may create complications and increase bruising.
- Clothing
Wear comfortable, dark, loose-fitting clothing on the day of your treatment.
- Jewellery
Please leave jewellery and valuables at home.
- Make-up and moisturisers
On the day of your procedure please do not wear make-up if you are having treatment carried out on your face or neck or body moisturisers if you are having a body area treated.
- Treatment times
Treatment times are estimates only – you could be at the clinic longer than indicated.
- Returning home
It is advisable for someone else to drive you home after your treatment.
- Dietry guidelines
Please make sure you eat a light meal prior to your treatment.
On the day of Your Treatment
- Before your treatment you will have the opportunity to ask the doctor or nurse any other questions you have regarding the treatment.
- You will then be provided with a detailed consent form which you will be asked to read and sign.
- You will be provided with prophylactic oral antibiotics and oral analgesics 20-30 minutes before the procedure.
Post Treatment Advice
After your treatment we will again go through with you and give you written after care instructions in order to maximise your treatment benefits and avoid any undesirable side effects. Specific post treatment advice includes:
- Compression garments:
A special elastic-type compression garment will be put on the treated area at the end of your surgery to provide comfort and support and reduce any swelling or bruising in the treated area. The compression garment will also help your skin conform to your new body contour so it is important that your skin is not creased beneath the garment. 24 hours after you procedure you can remove the compression garment for showering or washing the garment only. The garment should then continue to be worn for 24 hours a day (with exception of the showering and garment laundering) for the first 2 weeks, followed by 12 hours daily for 2 weeks or as instructed by your doctor. Neck patients must wear chin garments for 24-48 hours as directed.
- Drainage:
You should expect drainage (oozing) of blood-tinged anaesthetic solution from the incision sites after the procedure. Although the fluid may appear red, it is mostly anaesthetic solution and saline and only 1% blood. In general, the more drainage there is, the less bruising and swelling there will be. This discharge usually settles within 24-48 hours. You will be fitted with absorbent pads under you compression garment after the procedure and you will be provided with additional absorbent pads so you can change them at home, as and when needed. Occasionally people can feel faint when changing their dressings so this is best done sitting or lying down so as not to injure yourself. Please note that while the pads will require changing you should not remove your garment completely within the first 24 hours.
- Bathing and showering:
You may shower 24 hours after your treatment however please do not bath or swim until the wounds are dry and healed completely. This is normally about 2 weeks after your treatment.
- Discomfort:
Post-operative discomfort differs between individuals and the areas treated. It can be quite uncomfortable for the first few days after treatment and you are advised to take the painkillers and anti-inflammatories supplied to you. After 3-4 days the discomfort generally settles substantially to a deep ache similar to a strenuous workout. This then usually settles within 1-4 weeks. However, when applying pressure to the treated area or during vigorous activities you may still experience a mild dull ache for some months.
- Swelling:
The degree and duration of swelling differs from area to area and person to person. Patients having their lower abdomen treated may experience significant swelling in their pubic area and those having their thighs treated may have swelling in their ankles and calves. The swelling is usually at its maximum during the first week and then slowly resolves over the following weeks. If excessive swelling persists for more than several weeks it can start to interfere with the cosmetic result. We therefore recommend the following to reduce the amount of swelling and duration: wear the compression garment as advised, take the medication supplied to you and drink plenty of clear fluids for at least a week after your procedure. Manual lymphatic drainage will also help with prolonged swelling.
- Bruising:
Bruising following LipoSelection by VASER® is normally minimal, nevertheless, the more extensive the surgery, the more bruising one can expect. Occasionally you can develop deep lumps which are nearly always due to deep bruising or post treatment inflammation.
- Treatment area:
Do not apply hot or cold compresses to the treatment area for at least 24 hours after your treatment, the skin may still be numb and this could lead to a burn. It is normal for the skin sensation in the treated area to be reduced after the treatment, this will resolve spontaneously over the following few weeks/months.
- Incision sites:
Your doctor will decide at the time of the procedure whether to close the incision sites with a simple stitch or leave them open to drain. Stitches will require removal at the clinic after 7-10 days. If your incision sites have been left open to drain, steristrips may be provided for you to apply after the drainage stops. Try to keep the steristrips as dry as possible and then remove them after 5-6 days. Protect incisions/any bruised areas from the sun until completely healed; use SPF 30 or greater for 6 months.
- Activity:
Although this procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia and there is no hospital stay you should still take it easy and not overexert yourself in the first 1-2 days. You may require someone to help you with your compression garment for the first few days after surgery. Take it easy during the first week, resuming normal activity as tolerated. Experiencing more than mild swelling or discomfort may indicate that you are over-doing it. Avoid strenuous activities, lifting over 10 lbs., or aerobic exercise for 2 – 3 weeks. When returning to exercise you may be more comfortable wearing the compression garment for a few weeks.
- Alcohol:
Alcohol dilates blood vessels, therefore you are advised to avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours after your procedure to reduce any risk of post-operative bleeding. As alcohol combined with medication can be dangerous, it is especially important that you do not consume alcohol whilst you are taking pain killers.
- Smoking:
You are advised not to smoke at all during the first 14 days after surgery as smoking reduces capillary flow in your skin and can slow down healing time.
- Irregularities and lumpiness:
Some irregularity and depression of the skin surface can occur and usually resolves spontaneously within a few weeks. Gentle self massage to the treatment area starting 10 days after your procedure will help with this. Wearing your compression garment, as advised, will also help with any temporary irregularities.
- Nausea/vomiting:
Nausea/vomiting after the procedure is nearly always due to the codeine based painkillers given to you after the treatment. Try to take these with food. If symptoms persist stop taking the Codydramol and take normal paracetamol instead.
- Expectations:
Remember, the goal of fat removal is not weight loss, but improved contour. In fact, since the body retains fluids in response to surgery, you may notice a temporary weight gain (resolving over the first week). Remember the results do take time so please be patient. A number of different processes have to occur before the end results are seen. These include: the swelling to subside, the fatty debris to drain, the remaining fat cells to degrade. The goal is improvement, not perfection!
